Skid steers and compact track loaders (CTLs) do the same jobs: grading, moving material, clearing and loading. The difference is what they stand on.
Wheeled Skid Steer
- Faster on hard surfaces; lower rental rate and running cost
- Tires wear on concrete turns but are cheap to replace
- Can rut lawns and get stuck in mud
Compact Track Loader
- Rubber tracks spread the weight: better in mud, sand, snow and on slopes
- Less lawn damage; smoother ride for grading
- Higher rate; tracks are expensive to damage on demolition debris
Attachments Make the Machine
Ask what is included: a general-purpose bucket is standard; pallet forks, augers, grapples, trenchers, breakers and box blades usually cost extra per day.
Size and Transport
Check the operating weight against your trailer and tow vehicle rating, or book delivery. Measure gates: small-frame machines and stand-on mini loaders fit where full-size ones cannot.
