Most rental and equipment-buying surprises come from fees nobody asked about: delivery, damage waivers, fuel, overtime hours and cleaning. Take these questions to every dumpster rental company you call, write the answers down side by side, and get the important ones on the contract.
When to reserve: usually 2–5 days ahead.
The Questions
- What size do I need, and how many tons are included?
- What is the cost per extra ton and per extra day?
- Which items are banned (tires, mattresses, paint, appliances, concrete)?
- Do I need a permit to place it on the street?
- Can you put boards down to protect my driveway?
- Is delivery, pickup and the landfill fee included in the price?
- How fast can you swap or empty it?
Tips
- Common roll-off sizes are 10, 20, 30 and 40 cubic yards; heavy debris like concrete often needs a smaller box because of weight limits.
- Street placement usually needs a city permit; driveways usually do not.
- Ask for the all-in price: rental days, tonnage and fuel or environmental fees.
Before You Sign
- Check the start and end dates and times, the exact model and attachments, and the total price.
- Read the damage, loss and late-return terms.
- Photograph the equipment at delivery and return.
- Pay by credit card where possible, and keep the signed contract.
