Call 811 Before You Dig

Updated November 5, 2026

Do I Need to Call 811 Before Digging?

Yes. Every U.S. state requires you to contact 811 before digging, whether by hand or with rented equipment, so buried gas, electric, water and communication lines can be marked. The service is free. Call 811 or file online a few business days before you dig (the exact notice period depends on your state), then wait for marks.

Hitting a buried line can cause injury, outages, fines and repair bills. The free national 811 service connects you to your state's one-call center.

How It Works

  1. Contact 811 by phone or online a few business days before digging (your state sets the exact notice).
  2. Describe where you will dig; white paint or flags help locators.
  3. Utility companies send locators to mark their lines.
  4. Wait until all utilities have responded, then dig carefully by hand near the marks.

Private Lines Are Not Marked

Utility locators mark public lines up to the meter. Lines you own (sprinklers, power to a shed, propane to a grill) are usually not marked; hire a private locator if needed.
